Despite
his brilliant future, his career in the NHL ended after he played in his first regular season game vs.
the New
Jersey Devils. Steve was blind-sided with a vicious check
10 seconds after the play was whistled dead.
Never
one to let obstacles stand in his way, Steve graduated from Miami
University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education
and began teaching elementary school in Ontario. It was also at
this time that he founded what has become the most popular
full-time goalie school in Canada and the U.S. - Future Pro. |
From
a coaching standpoint, Steve McKichan has experienced success
at all levels from AAA to the NHL In fact, during the '96-'97 season, Steve coached the goaltenders
with the Detroit Vipers (IHL). Not only did the Vipers win
the Turner Cup Championship with the tandem of Rich Parent
and Jeff Reese; they set goaltending records that are unlikely
to be broken. That year, under Steve's guidance, the Vipers'
goalies set the ALL-TIME record for the lowest goals
against average in the history of the IHL! Prior to the 2003-2004
season, Steve was hired to coach Ed
Belfour. After one season working with Belfour,
Steve was officially hired on as the goaltending coach of
the Toronto Maple Leafs. In Steve's first season as the Leafs' goalie coach, in 2003-2004, the team set an ALL-TIME record for points in a season and in the 2005-2006 season, they set an ALL-TIME record for home wins in a season. Under Steve's guidance, Ed
Belfour set a Leaf record for wins in a season with 37. During his first season as Toronto
Maple Leafs' goaltending coach, Todd Ford (rookie) was
named to the ECHL All-Star game. Under Steve's guidance, Justin Pogge developed into the WHL MVP, Goaltender of the year in the CHL, and was a star player on the 2005-2006 Canadian World Junior Championship team. Under Steve's direction, Andrew Raycroft set several Leaf
records during the 2006 - 2007 season. He set the all-time record for
Leaf road wins in a season and tied Ed
Belfour for the most wins in a
season in Leaf's history. During the 2007-2008 season, Vesa Toskala set a career personal record for wins in a season with 33!
When
you search for a summer camp, your first consideration should
be credentials. Simply put, you cannot find this level of
credibility anywhere else!
Steve
is a respected goaltending columnist and author who backs
up these credentials with personal commitment. He personally
instructs at every camp he offers.
